BAN THE BOX CAMPAIGN IS “VICTORIOUS” IN NEW YORK CITY

Dear Friends, Advocates and Representatives:

On April 13, 2011 Mayor Michael Nutter of Philadelphia, signed into law the
“Fair Criminal Record Screening Standards” Ordinance. Council-woman Donna Reed Miller of the 18th Council District introduced the Bill. Mayor NutteR explained how ex-offenders face many stumbling blocks when attempting to re-enter society, employment being only one of them. “One of their greatest challenges is overcoming their criminal records. This legislation will make it easier for ex-offenders to be judged by their abilities, as opposed to their past.”

On April 20, 2011, I faxed a “BAN THE BOX” Proposal to every member of the Corrections Committee in the New York State Assembly and members of the New York State Senate.  On June 14, 2011, I faxed the same Proposal to every member of the New York City Council. As a result of these Proposals, I received a call on May 16, 2011 from Ms. Sandy Stewart from New York State Senator Velmanette Montgomery’s Office informing me that because of my Proposal and the urging of other advocates, Senator Ruth Hassell-Thompson, of the 36th Senate District will be introducing a Ban the Box Bill in the Senate to correspond with Assemblyman Jeffrion Aubry’s Ban the Box Bill in the NYS Assembly.  I recently received a call from NYC Council-Member Jumaane D. Williams Office – giving me his support for my Proposal. On June 22, 2011, I received an email from New York City Council Speaker Christine C. Quinn. Speaker Quinn had this to say:

          Dear Mr. Deadwiley,

Thank you for your email urging the NYC Council to pass a “Ban the Box” Ordinance to assist unemployed people with criminal convictions in finding Employment. I greatly appreciate you gathering and sending us information about the history of the “Ban the Box” movement and your efforts to get a “Ban the Box” ordinance passed by the State Legislature. Some of our most important laws begin with people like you, and I will be sure to forward a copy of your email to the staff of the appropriate Council Committee for their review and consideration as we continue to look for ways to help make New York a better place for us all.

Thanks again for sharing this information with us, Mr. Deadwiley. Your advocacy on behalf of all New Yorkers is greatly appreciated. Take care.

Sincerely

Christine C. Quinn

Speaker, NYC Council

I am truly delighted and extremely honored to report to you that Mayor Michael Bloomberg has ordered NYC Agencies to “Ban the Box” on their application’s and reserve the inquiry into a person’s criminal history until “after the interview process.” According to a New York Post Article, Mayor Bloomberg had this to say:

I believe that as long as you have served your time and stayed clean, and the crime you committed isn’t related to the job you’re seeking or a threat to public safety, you deserve a second chance just like everyone else.

I want to personally thank the National Employment Law Project (NELP), The National Hire Network (NHN) and the Community Service Society of New York (CSSNY) for their “stead-fast” advocacy on this issue.
