WHY DON’T YOU TAKE A WALK ON THE WILD SIDE WLADIMIR KLITSCHKO?
COMMENTARY
│Now that newly crowned WBC Heavyweight Champion Bermane Stiverne (24-1-1) is
the legitimate holder of the only heavyweight belt not in the hands of the
Internationally recognized Heavyweight Champion Wladimir Klitschko (62-3-53KOs),
the boxing pundits are all abuzz about the possibility of a unification bout
between the two champions. Don’t get me wrong, I would like to see the fight as
well, even though I don’t think Stiverne has an ice cubes chance in hell of
beating Wladimir Klitschko. In my opinion, Bermane Stiverne might as well
simply walk over to Wladimir’s corner before the start of the first round and
hand him the WBC Heavyweight belt. Boxing is called the “sweet science” for a
reason. In boxing, weight, height, arm length, foot movement, head movement,
speed, accuracy and power all come together in a stew sending an opponent to
the canvass. The late, great boxing trainer Emmanuel Stewart taught the
Klitschko brothers how to fight “tall,” use their jab effectively and never
give up their height to any fighter. Wladimir learned his lessons well, and
that is why he has successfully defended his title 16 times.
Being
the big boxing fan that I am, I crave to see the big fights that are
unpredictable. Unfortunately, Wladimir Klitschko has been for the most part
fighting “C” class fighters with no chance of upsetting him. I would be unfair
to Wladimir if I said it was all his fault though. Ever since the exit of Mike
Tyson, Evander Holyfield and Lennox Lewis, the Heavyweight division has been a wasteland
of class “C” contenders with no chance of defeating a tall, strong and
experienced boxer like Wladimir. This fantasy match-up between Wladimir Klitschko
and Bermane Stiverne is as predictable as they come. This is part of the reason
why I question the almost “universal” desire from the established boxing pundits
on ESPN, Showtime and HBO to have Bermane Stiverne bypass a mandatory fight
with another “tall,” “strong” albeit less experienced, but none the less
dangerous fighter in Deontay Wilder (31-31KOs). Since Wladimir was ordered by
the IBF to fight a mandatory defense with Kubrat Pulov (20-0-11KOs). Klitschko can make his mandatory
defense of his title, Stiverne can make the mandatory defense of his title, and
the winner of those fights can meet at the end of 2014 or the beginning of 2015.
I’m
quite “suspicious” as to the motives of these pundits wanting to cheat Deontay
Wilder out of his opportunity to win the WBC title. With 31 wins and 31
knockouts, Deontay Wilder appears to be the only fighter in the heavyweight
division that can upset Wladimir Klitschko. If I had a choice, I would like to
see Wladimir Klitschko take a walk on the “wild” side and fight Deontay Wilder.
I would like to see Wladimir Klitschko fight someone with the equal power to match
his for a change. I would like to see Wladimir Klitschko fight someone with the
arm length and tall fighting ability to match his own fighting style for a
change. To put it briefly, I would like to see Wladimir Klitschko fight someone
his own size for a change.
